A Drought Tolerant Turfgrass Option: Buffalograss

Buffalograss is a species of grass that is native to the Great Plains of the United States. Long before the first settlers built their homes on the plains, huge herds of buffalo roamed free and fed on this grass, hence the name. It’s a warm-season grass with growing popularity as a low-maintenance option for turfgrass. One of Buffalograss’ best qualities is its drought resistance, as it can survive on as little as one and a half inches of rainfall per month. Lawn care for Buffalo grass is about as easy as it can be.

Buffalograss Characteristics

  • Blue-gray in color
  • Naturally grows to three to twelve inches long
  • Soft in texture
  • Stoloniferous growth habit

Buffalograss has a distinct blue-ish gray color and is soft in texture due to its thin leaves. It stays relatively short, and even if left unmowed, the leaves fold over, giving it the appearance of being much shorter than it actually is. It grows by producing stolons, which are aboveground runners that produce new leaves as they grow across the ground. Because it is not a thick turfgrass, Buffalo grass is more susceptible to invasive weeds.

How to Care for Buffalograss

While Buffalo grass is a low-maintenance turfgrass option, it does still require basic lawn care to look its best. Your lawn care should include:

Liquid Soil Loosener
  1. Fertilizing with liquid lawn care twice per year. Once in early spring, and again in June or July. Use a fertilizer rich in nitrogen to encourage new leafy growth.
  2. Aerate once in early spring, for optimal new growth and healthy soil. Complete this lawn care step before your first application of fertilizer, as compacted soil cannot receive the nutrients as well as loose soil. Use liquid lawn care soil loosener for convenience.
  3. Control weeds before you plant new buffalograss, and when you fertilize. Hand weed throughout the growing season whenever possible. You can use a granular weeder or liquid lawn care for added convenience.
  4. Mow your buffalograss approximately once a week to maintain a length of two to three inches.
  5. Your buffalograss requires very little water. However, for optimal health and color, make sure your lawn care routine includes your lawn getting a moderate amount of water each week.
  6. Due to its stoloniferous growth habit, you may want to edge your buffalograss along sidewalks or garden beds for that professional lawn care look.

Is Liquid Lawn Care Really Better?

There are a lot of products to consider when it comes to caring for your lawn. Liquid lawn care is not only the most convenient option when it comes to application, but it’s also the better option for the overall health of your lawn. Liquid lawn care has a more uniform, or homogenous, formula which means that each drop is going to provide the same solution to your sod. It also has less salt in the formula, which is better for the overall health of your green lawn. Lastly, liquid lawn care gets nutrients to your soil and the roots of your turfgrass faster for quicker results.
