10 Steps to Prepare Your Lawn Equipment for Lawn Season

Whether pulling out a lawn mower, trimmer, or aerator, taking the time to do some maintenance now will save you headaches later. The growing season is coming soon, and it is a great time to start preparing your lawn equipment. Preseason prep and preventive measures now will save time and money this season.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to preparing your lawn equipment for the season.

1. Inspect Your Lawn Care Equipment

Any tool or piece of equipment that will be utilized in the lawn should be inspected.  Identify any problems with the equipment that might alter the operation of your lawn care program.  Make the necessary repairs and perform regular start-up maintenance for the season.

  • Look for Damage: Check your mower, trimmers, and other tools for rust, cracks, frayed wires, or worn parts.

  • Test Moving Parts: Spin mower blades, pull starter cords, and check belts for wear or tightness.

  • Review Safety Features: Ensure that safety guards, switches, and shields are intact and functional.

2. Change the Oil in Your Lawn Mower

Regular oil changes are essential for keeping your mower’s engine running smoothly.

  • When to Change: Oil should be changed before starting up equipment that has been inoperable for an extended period. Additionally, the oil should be changed every 50 hours of mechanical operation.

  • How to Change Oil:

    • Drain the old oil using the drain plug or by tipping the mower carefully.

    • Replace the oil filter (if applicable).

    • Refill with fresh, manufacturer-recommended oil to the correct level.

  • Why It’s Important: Old oil can contain dirt and debris, reducing engine performance and causing long-term damage.

3. Replace or Sharpen Mower Blades

Sharp mower blades make clean cuts, which are healthier for your lawn.

  • Inspect Blades: Remove the blades and check for dullness, chips, or cracks.

  • Sharpen or Replace:

    • Use a grinder or file to sharpen dull blades.

    • Replace blades if they are excessively worn or damaged.

  • Reinstall Properly: Ensure blades are balanced to prevent vibrations that could damage your mower.

4. Clean the Equipment

A clean machine operates more efficiently and prevents the spread of lawn diseases.

  • Remove Debris: Clear out old grass clippings, dirt, and leaves from under the mower deck and around vents.

  • Wash and Dry: Use a damp cloth or hose to clean the exterior of your equipment, and dry thoroughly to prevent rust.

5. Replace Air Filters

Clogged air filters can reduce engine efficiency and make your mower work harder.

  • Inspect the Filter: Look for dirt, debris, or damage.

  • Replace When Needed: Foam filters can be cleaned with soapy water and dried, while paper filters should be replaced annually or as needed.

  • Why It’s Important: A clean air filter ensures proper airflow to the engine, improving performance and fuel efficiency.

6. Check the Spark Plug

A faulty spark plug can prevent your engine from starting.

  • Inspect the Plug: Remove the spark plug and look for wear, cracks, or carbon buildup.

  • Clean or Replace: Clean lightly with a wire brush if in good condition; otherwise, replace it with a new spark plug.

  • Set the Gap: Use a spark plug tool to ensure the gap matches the manufacturer’s recommendations.

7. Refill or Replace Fuel

Stale fuel can clog your engine and reduce performance.

  • Drain Old Fuel: If you didn’t drain the fuel before storing your equipment, do so now and dispose of it properly.

  • Refill with Fresh Gasoline:

    • Use fuel with the correct octane rating for your equipment.

    • Add a fuel stabilizer to extend the life of your gasoline.

  • Why It’s Important: Fresh fuel prevents starting issues and keeps the engine running smoothly.

8. Lubricate Moving Parts

Friction can wear out parts quickly, so regular lubrication is essential.

  • What to Lubricate:

    • Pivot points, wheels, and bearings on mowers.

    • Chains or cutting heads on trimmers.

  • Use Manufacturer-Recommended Products: Apply grease or oil sparingly to avoid attracting dirt.

9. Test the Equipment

First, make sure the engine starts quickly and sounds and runs smoothly.  Start the throttle on low and increase the PRM’s slowly and listen for any unusual noises or sounds of poor performance. Engage cutting blades to see if there are any vibrations generated from rotation of cutting blades. Repeat the process for each motorized piece of equipment and adjust settings as needed.

10. Organize and Prepare for the Season

With your equipment ready, it’s time to set up your workspace for efficient lawn care. Mechanical tools utilized to repair and maintain your lawn equipment can be stored in the same place in order to save time and perform rapid repairs. Organizing hand tools in an orderly fashion that are easily accessible. Stock up on supplies such as oil, belts, air filters, lubricants as well as fertilizers and soil conditioners you will be using in your lawn maintenance program.  Create a schedule that includes mowing, fertilizing, aerating, topdressing, and weed control.
